Reading around the World - A challenge for 2nd graders
We want our kids to become readers for life and to feel the rewards of reading-for-pleasure, but young readers often get into the routine of choosing the same books or series repeatedly and may hesitate to try something new. Learning to choose a variety of books takes practice.
With a little nudge toward other genres and some tips on how to choose just-right books our kids can begin to take greater responsibility for their reading habits. This is where the 2nd Grade Reading Challenge comes in.
Our second graders are solidifying reading skills and are in many cases ready to cope with longer, more complicated texts. During the challenge, which takes place in the second semester of school, each 2nd grader is invited to read different genres as they 'travel' from continent to continent. Students are given passports and collect stickers as they meet short-term goals, and those who make it around the world are rewarded for their dedication and task management.
