Books, or the stories and information they hold,  can entertain us, hold our attention,  sow seeds of curiosity and often stun or surprise the reader. At the same time, underneath our act of reading, other things are happening to our understanding and vocabularies. 
For example, the words below, as well as the phrases on the right, were taken from the text of a folktale, Lady Kaguya's Secret. It's a picture book written at almost a 6th grade reading level. Take a look at some of the vocabulary words and phrases in this story:
