In case you haven't heard, let me tell you: We have a school full of thoughtful kids (and adults). It seemed that everywhere I looked today I saw acts of kindness and generosity. A fourth grader volunteered to clean up lots of books someone else had misplaced. Two kids were just about to start playing a board game when two others wandered up, asking, "Can we play?" There was no hesitation. Of course they could play. I saw a teacher's face light up with genuine praise for a student's willingness to take a risk with her writing, and later I saw older lower school students assisting younger ones at lunch, something they do daily. The even better news is that our school is almost always like this. This is our normal, our ethos. Our kids are caring and sometimes I stop to realize how very fortunate we all are to share this space everyday and to learn from one another. Learning to be kind is an important part of learning. May we never take this for granted. |
